Coming home from work on Friday, when setting off it seemed clear enough to put the top down (ie. it wasn't actually raining too hard at that moment), but after about 10 minutes it was raining hard enough to need the wipers on fast and still barely be able to see the car in front, water cascading off my cap's peak, yet I was loving it.

The car was a tad wet inside (some small puddles in the seats etc..) but it seems to have dried out now.

I hope some other owners do this and that it's not just me? I could see a few odd looks from "sensible" motorists....

I do yes, but not on the way to work - hate sitting around in wet clothes for a few hours!

Yes!

As long as you're going at over the 'dry speed'...

I didn't find the dry speed that day, even at 60 I was getting soaked. I think I'd have been dryer if I went and stood under the shower.

The "dry speed" will depend on your height. I need to be doing 50+ to be dry, any slower and I start getting a wet head. I'm 6'1".

I have been 'caught' topless in the rain a couple of times - one particular occasion stands out I was driving along the A55 to an MOT & the heavens emptied, so bad that the rain was bouncing a good 6" off the tarmac.

@ 60mph+ it was surreal, as if 'Pickard' had anounced "sheilds up" with just a few drops on the tonnau cover and nothing more - however I fear this would have been a completely different story if I had been stuck in traffic & forced to slow down!

The faces on the other car drivers as I passed is something I'll not soon forget yikes

Odd that - I too believe I have a "Dry Speed" - circa 30-35.
Any thing above, and it needs to be torrential to get you a little damp - nothing more.

Mine is a MK1.
Is this Model specific I wounder scratchchin
I've not had mine roof down in a torrential rainstorm yet, but in pretty persistent rain (constant slow wipers required) it was dry at 40mph with the windows up. Slower than that, and the stream of water that runs along the side window (IYSWIM) creeps up to the top of the glass and the vortex sprays your ear a bit.

I try to honour my promise to myself that; If it's dry, & looks like it will remain so for the journey, I will always go topless.

So I get caught out quite a bit. Mostly 35-40mph I'm pretty dry & quite enjoy hearing the rain pinging off the style bar like bullets.

It's stopping at junctions/lights etc that gets me instantly wet. That does amuse fellow motorists- so I'm performing a public service then :-)

Mine's a mk1 also, but it was absolutely heaving it down so I'm not surprised that the airflow didn't stop the water landing in the car.

A few years ago I was on the M6 toll, roof down, windblocker in place. It began to rain. It rained heavier, and heavier still. I studiously ignored it, repeating to myself the mantra "It is NOT raining...it is an illusion.." Most of the rain passed right over me but eventually it was coming down so heavily I became soaked, so had to pull over under the cover of a bridge to put the roof up.

When lightning stuck the bridge above me, I nearly sh@t myself...

I discovered this yesterday! I too had the wipers on fast, but not a drop came in. I think it partly depends on wind direction, too. Subject to that, I was fine until I stopped. Then I was glad I had the fabric roof, not the new fangled metal one.

As far as I am concerned, if it is dry, the roof's down and that's the end of it. I once got out with ice in my hair...

Me, OK so I ain't got a proper MX5, (it's a Mk3) but I'll drive topless if the rain isn't too bad.
