I must be the only person in the UK with an MX5 with no aircon.

The car is a 2005 Icon.

Is it possible/has anyone done it/is it very expensive to have aircon fitted?

Thanks in advance, Kim

It can be cheap, when I ripped mine out of my track car I offered it for free on the owners club, chap came and took it away got it fitted. One pipe needed replacing as it was corroded, £36 later & a re-gas he had working Air con on his car.

Not sure if Mk1 & Mk2.5 AC is the same. I'm pretty sure the gas it uses will be different and I'm not sure about the legality of using a system from an older car and gassing with the gas required for that system. Might be no problem at all, just thinking out loud with no real knowledge.
I've never heard of anyone removing AC from a Mk2.5. Might be able to get one from a scrapper.

Later Mk.1s use R134a which is the modern a/c gas. My 94 does, certainly. System should work either way oalthough may have been "optimised".

If you change the seals when you refit there's no reason why you can't "convert it". Had it done to my other car cheaply a few years ago.

Hi Kim,

Do you mean that your car was not originally specced with AC or someone has removed is since the car was built?

If it's the former i'm not sure it's possible to retrofit.

Should be easy its an option afterall, so will have all the looms etc ready to connect up. Just need to make sure you get all the bits you need.

Hi Paul, no it wasn't specced with aircon.

We bought it in January and didn't even check unfortunately. It's amazing how much you miss it when you haven't got it - even in winter.

KH - I've removed the A/c from my car, give me a shout if your interested. As far as I know I have the whole lot apart from one small section of pipe - I deliberately removed it in a 'non-destructive' manner.
