I had the car serviced at MX5 Parts a while ago, but the invoice doesn't state the make or grade of oil. I know that it was fully synthetic.

Anyone know what oil and grade they normaly use? They're closed now, and I need to buy some for a top up.

Cheers,

Lee

I can't say what they use specifically. But for top ups you'd have no problems using any fully synth with at least 10w-40 rating. I use Mobil1 0w-40 in my MX.

You can mix oil brands. Obviously the oil companies want you to stick with theirs. But I've never had any "problems".

But what about mixing grades?

Please don't mix grades smile

Give them a shout to see what they supply.

Personally I'm a Mobil-1 5w-30 man though any fully synth should be up to the job on a 5 IMO.

There is no problem mixing grades or brands of oil just as there is no problem mixing synthetic & mineral oils (synthetic oils are based on mineral oils anyway). I always use Mobil1 0-40.

I use M1 0 40 in the TVR, but I've always used Magnatec 10 40 in the 5.

Can't cal them until Monday, and I wanted to top up this weekend. I'; put some M1 in I think.

yes

Mine leaks magnatec 10w40, don't really see the point in putting fully synth in a tired old low-tech engine.

It depends on how long you plan on having the car. If it's a car you'll only have for 3 years and pass on it's hardly worth it. If it's something you plan on running for as long as you can. Then it's all about making sure it'll last.

Either way if I was the OP I'd top up with any good brand synthetic he can find in the local motor factors.

What's the recommended grade of oil for a Mk1 MX5 (1.8)?

Mrs Theboy's Merlot needs a top-up.

I have just put in Mobil 10-40w fully synth in mine. I would say any old 10-40x semi or synth will be fine to be honest. Just make sure its got all the usual stamps etc....

Wouldn't 5 - 40 give better cold start lubrication?

Is that Mobil 1 0-40 or Mobil 10-40?

Mobil 1 0-40 is fine in an MX5.

FYI - I've had a bit of a problem with noisy tappets in my car at times.

I've done a lot of oil changes and used a few different brands/grades/types of oil.

I did initially agree that putting expensive Fully synthetic oil in an old, ismple engine was a waste.

But - running on Mobil 1 0-40 has completely cured all the noise/tapping issues and it does run, and particularly start, a lot smoother.

Costco is your friend here.

I think it was £20. IE - about what it costs for some 'car lube' or cheapy semi-synth in my local motor factors.

I will definitely be using fully synthetic now on regardless of cost - it really has been an instant cure for the tapping I was getting.

It is also definitely hte oil that made the difference - not just the fact that I had changed it - what came out was only 1500 miles or so old.

Not bad - completely agree re a full synth, but might go for the Motul 8100 5 ltr from Opie instead of M1.
