I have for some time been suffering a problem whereby the car would swerve to the left when changing gear at high revs - not massively so, but enough to dis-inspire confidence. Had the alignment/tracking done, someone checked the suspension, etc. Anyway, as a last resort before taking it to a mx-5 specialist, I tried swapping the front and rear wheels - problem solved! And only because the left and right tyres were different makes. Had no idea the handling would be so sensitive to different tread patterns. Anyway - just thought I'd share it in case anyone else is suffering sub-mx5 handling!

That's why the advice is to always try to fit the same tyres across axles. Different front to back can cause other oddness but different side-to-side is likely to cause more problems, especially at the front.

I'd suspect its more due to tyre wear than tread pattern but yes the MX5 is very sensitive to tyres and geo.
