I have a large(ish) leak on the drivers side rear caliper on my '96 Merlot.

The leak is coming from the lower black ribbed sheath as you can see in this pic:

Is this a common problem, and will a replacement caliper do the job?

Are you sure, as I see it that's a slide pin? No fluid in there, must be running down from the piston in the middle. A new caliper would fix it or if you feel brave you could get a seal kit and refurb it yourself. Or send your old one in and exchange it for a refurbed caliper (cheaper than a new one and it's a form of recycling)

Get the replacment rubber kit from mx5parts (£15.00) and do it yourself, I did and it took about 1 1/2 hrs to replace the lot

I was under the impression that the MX5 calipers were difficult to refurbish, so I didn't even look down that route.

As first reply, it can't be there is no fluiid there and that one is above the piston when fitted.

Go have a better look and report back.

Rear pistons sticking/binding is pretty common. I can't say I've seen many reported with leaks though.
