Unfortunately I don't have my V8 soundtrack in the form of a Chimaera yet so I'm making do with Motown classics twinned with the Yeah Yeah Yeah's new album but so often it's drowned out by my insistence for top down motoring wherever I go.

I never thought I'd be asking a question regarding a sound system in a car as I've always been content with what the car already has but alas I don't think I can cope a whole summer with my current setup.

Over 80/90 leptons & more prominently over a 100 leptons I'm just totally unable to hear any music.

What have you lot done to make hearing the music you love that bit easier?

The Prodigy turned up to 11.

Seemed to do the trick even up to 120 mph.

HTH.

Sound deaden the doors , fit decent component speakers and a gutsy 2 channel amp , and whatever headunit you want to drive it with , if you have a mk2 8" pioneer's drop in the doors and done right can sound bloody good .

I added Alpine componets, mounted them correctly and Flash Banded the doors.

50% better for around £80 all in.

I added Dynamat to the doors, a couple of decent speakers and a small Genesis amp. Works well enough up to Autobahn speeds.

I'd just like to stress that the key here is volume rather than sound quality. There is little point spending big money on a top quality system because as soon as you start moving you will lose most of it anyway. Spend the money on efficient speakers and a good amp and that'll be about as good as it gets.

But the better the sound quality, the louder you can go without the speakers distorting.

+1. Decent speakers and a decent amp will drive the volume. A good head unit will only improve the sound quality.

But the more efficient the speakers the higher the sound volumes with less power so less demands on the systems and less distortion. Also, if you have speakers that can handle very low bass (i.e. less than 50hz) and a head-unit & amp which are capable of pushing lots of power through that range then the speakers are going to be overloaded and start distorting much earlier than speakers that can't reproduce that range. The lower the bass the more power you need to reproduce it. It's cheaper & easier to choose cheaper speakers that can't reproduce very deep bass as you can't hear it on the move in an MX-5 anyway.
