Having some problem with my cluth on the mx5..... think its buggered but would appreciate any advice....

When lifting the clutch, the car seem to judder and spluuter, something (not the exhaust) also makes a popping kinda sound.

Once on the move everything is fine, gear changes after this are fine, (with a slight spluttering after the change) unless for example you are going a little to slow for the gear you are in and then the juddering and popping sounds start again.

Theres no slippage on the clutch just this noise.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Are the engine mounts OK?

Not sure to be honest.

Does it sound likely?

Sounds more like a misfire to me. How old are the plugs & leads?

Not been changed while i've owned her - (since last november) not sure before that.

Problem only manifests itself when I change gear though, which is why i instantly thought cluth problem.

I don't know, but I'm sure I've read plenty of times on the owners club forums about knackered engine mounts leading to a lot of juddering and lumping when changing gear.

If the juddering disappears over about 3000rpm I would suggest plugs and leads, mine was doing the same just after christmas,it could be a £30 fix instead of around £300 for a new clutch including fitting.I had to have a new clutch anyway because the spigot and thrust bearings were shot.

It does actually i noticed today while i was testing it again - seems to be much worse in the low revs and vanishes higher up, the popping does sound misfirey aswell.

Fingers crossed.

Misfires when cold and/or at low revs are common, and fortunately a very easy and cheap fix smile I changed the plugs and leads at the same time to cure mine though, so I can't say which of the two actually fixed it wink

Its definitly a misfire - let a friendly garage have a look this morning, - this i'm glad about about.

Only downside is he said they'd check the coilpack for me...... which may also be dead.

If its just the plugs and leads i'll do it myself.

I doubt it's a coilpack. They tend to work or not work, they don't usually cause a misfire. Even if it does turn out to be the coil-pack it would be easy to replace yourself.
