Howdy folks
Was given a drive of an early (s reg) mk2 yesterday.
Now, this is the first time I've driven a mk2, and on the smooth A roads, it was lovely, with nice pointy steering and just generally nice to drive. Until I came to a quite a rutted and potholed back-road and bloody hell, what a terrible ride!
Being new to the world of convertibles, I am guessing that what I experienced was scuttle-shake? Bear in mind that the suspension was totally standard - is this symptomatic of the handling over bad surfaces?
The other thing I noticed was that the car didn't seem patricularly stable under heavy braking from 70+. Nothing too drastic but enough for me to notice. Again, is this another trait of the car?

My 15yr old car is badly in need of an aligment, and has original bushed and shocks that could do with a rebuild.
It sounds just like that one - it still handles fantastically, but on rough broked bits of B roads it rattles about like a bd and wavers a little when your hard on the brakes.
Having ridden in cars that have had their suspension sorted or are in better nivk, they are much better.
Although the chassis will never be as stiff as a tin top.

I'd agree with RF. I'ds suggest it needs a good geo setup and probably a change of tyres too.
Mine could do with getting done. Anyone know of a good place in SW London ? or somewhere that has a good reputation. As with all things a good reputation from other users is always best.Edited by Zebrano on Sunday 26th April 20:34

Aye, that a good point as you mention it, I forgot to add that thy tyres were el-cheapo unknowns. Even at that, I was genuinely surprised how badly it rode over uneven surfaces, I mean my previous car had track-spec coilovers and it was nowhere near as bad as how this thing felt.Seriously, it was as though there was a pair of solid steel bars at the back, instead of suspension!

It's astounding how much a correct geo transforms the car. Seriously, it was as though there was a pair of solid steel bars at the back, instead of suspension!
Of course, you then have to keep on top of it with regular checks (yearly at least IMO) but decent tyres, correct pressures, maintained suspension and geo are vital in how these cars behave. The difference was night and day when I got my geo first done.
