Well my MR2 turbo has gone and I'm considering getting another MX5 (Mk.1), I have had one before, to be honest I didn't actually enjoy it much but it was a bit of a dog! I really want a car that I can

a. work on myself (mechanical knowledge isn't all that to be honest but very willing to learn and from September doing Motorsport Tech at uni)
b. use as my uni project if it stays that long, everyday transport and for trackdays
c. I'd like to completely change the interior of the car (as this is the main bit I don't like) has it been done, are there kits to do this yourself?
d. make it a great fast road / track car

Looking at all the bits you can get for MX5 I've seen these hard dog roll bars on some of them, where do you get them from and how much are they?

Can you change the steering wheel on an airbag car? I can't find a steering wheel boss anywhere for one.

1.6 (115 bhp) or 1.8 or doesn't it make no difference if substantial work will be done to the engine?

RS seats can you get them from anywhere? Or would I just need to buy some sparcos or simular?

Hard dog roll bars from performance 5 http://www.performance5.com/interior_rollbar.asp. They are more expensive than the jap variants, but you get more seat travel as they bolt in to the bulkhead rather than the flood.

Most of the MK1's already have the momo wheel- and boss- fitted. Expose it by removing the centre part of the sterring wheel. There are some other bosses on ebay.

I'm not sure there's much point doing substatial engine work, other than forced induction or throttle bodies. On a cost to performance basis I think you'd probably spend a lot of money for little return by going internal.

Thanks biggrinsmile

I know the older ones have the momo wheel but some of the newer Mk.1s have a airbag steering wheel which I can't find a boss for, I don't like these steering wheels (very superficial I know hehe)

Don't get one with a drivers airbag. Problem solved. You shouldn't remove an airbag steering wheel anyway as there is a risk of it going off while you are removing it - that's very dangerous. You'd need to get a dealer or good garage to remove it (many won't touch it).

As for the interior - a few people have replaced the Mk1 interior for one out of a Mk2. This looks very nice and modernises the interior. They are easy to get hold of and it's a fairly simple swap.

Engine mods? Well you can do quite a lot without FI but the costs are high and the gains are (mostly) low whereas FI is relatively cheap for the gains.

best / easiest way to improve interior is to strip it, especially if you are going for sparco's etc (don't bother with the carbon RS seats, difficult to find and very expensive)
