can somebody clarify the 1.6 engine bhp differences please.
Discussion
I know that there were two 1.6 engines in the mx5. One that made 114 ish and the other 80 ish (you know what i mean)
talking strictly uk models, when did the swap come and was there power steering in the higher bhp model?
im sure its been asked countless times but the search function is rubbish- i did try- promise
basically im looking for the higher bhp 1.6 with power steering UK version and wonder if it actually exists (the imports add £££ to insurance)

You need a pre-93 1.6. The 88bhp 1.6 came out some time in 93-94 as an insurance friendly option.
Most of the UK cars of that age should have power steering, leccy windows etc though there will be some very base models that do without everything (just as there are JDM cars).
With the insurance thing - try phoning around a few more companies i.e. Adrian Flux, Sky, Tesco etc. as it really shouldn't cost too much more to insure a JDM car.

Mk2 & 2.5 1.6 is somewhere between 110-120bhp.
Mk1 1.6 114bhp & 88bhp will be roughly the same weight so there is no power-to-weight advantage to the low-power version. If anything the 88bhp version might be a bit heavier as later cars were heavier (hence the move to 1.8 130bhp engines).

May i suggest a 1.6 MR2 if your looking at something small and RWD, the 1,6 engine used in the MR2 was pushing close to 130bhp and it insurable to me (a 20 year old with 0ncb) for 1200 fully comp on own policy.
I saw you asking what V8's were insurable to a 20year old, so i assume you are 20.
Just a suggestion
