I have a 1998 mk1 and want to upgrade the speakers in the doors. I have a set of good quality 6x9 speakers that were in my old car on the parcel shelf.

Can these be fitted in the doors to give a better sound than the standard units, and if so how big a job would it be?

Thanks

They'd fit..... With the aid of an angle-grinder.

The standard door speakers are 5 or 6 inches in diameter, so 6x9" elliptical speakers won't fit!

Just fit some good 6.5cm speakers. If you find you want more bass power them with a small amp. Much beyond that and you are throwing money down the drain.

I already have a set of 6x9s left over from my old car so wont be spending anything. Is it just the speaker mount or the aperture in the door that is the issue?

I think the speaker aperture on a Mk1 is made for 6.5cm speakers. You might be able to fit 6x9 by spacing them out a bit but that would mean having them mounted over the door covers. To fit them under the door covers you would need to cut the door metal to make the aperture bigger. Before you do this make sure the speaker wouldn't foul the window mechanism.

On a Mk2+ the aperture is 8" with an adapter to take it down to 6.5cm. Oddly enough the speakers fitted in Mk2+ is 5x7!

Cheers - i'll take off the speaker grill / door card and have a look. Don't like the sound of cutting bits off the door though!
