.... And there seemed to be more sparks than usual when connecting the net jump lead to the earth. When it was hooked up there was no sign of life from the car. No lights on the instrument panel, nada!
Any ideas why this may be? The car has been sat over winter, and the battery seems to have gone completely flat. This in spite of it being brand new in sept. It has been jumped recently a couple of times to start it without issue.....

You did connect it the right way round didn't you?

Check there is nothing taking the charge out of the battery i.e. something connecting live with the chassis etc.

Check the alternator and get the regulator tested.

Mine was a loose fan belt after two batteries flat.
