Strange one last night - driving the car home from Tesco's last night and the revs appeared to be dropping but with no disernable change in the engine note...

Has anyone experienced this before? Possibly a bad earth on the instrument cluster?

My rev counter starting sticking one day, it would get stuck at 1500rpm then suddenly drop to about 400, with no obvious link to the engine itself. Only did it for one day when it was really cold, never seen it again.

Was perfectly well behaved... still got the issue of it idling at 1500rpm when cold but that's a seperate issue

Mine did this last night.

Rev counter dropped to approx 100rpm yet it was clearly idling fine.

I'll take a look today but on a 1.8 I seem to remember the earth near the front left of the engine is the usual suspect.

ooh, i'm glad someone bought this up, mine did the same the other day with no change in engine note. However today i left her idling and when i went back she'd stopped confused I'll check the contacts, but i'm a bit reluctant to do much to her as she's been running extremely well and smoothly lately.

Yes.

I forgot to look at mine as it hasn't done it since.
