Buy your own parts, brake pads etc, cam belt.
then get a quote just for the labour. That way it will be cheaper.
I went to radcliffe tyres in radcliffe, brought my own new radiator, spark plugs etc, oil, oil filter, air filter. £175 the lot.

£59 per axle for just a brake pad change sound a bit steep - it's a really simple job, all you need is a socket set and some copper grease. Why not buy a service book (this one is very good for novices: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Do-Up-Practical-Renovation... ) and do the service yourself? Changing the oil is also very easy, especially if you buy one of these fluid extractors: http://www.screwfix.com/prods/21663/Van-Car-Access...
