Induction Noise
Discussion
Ok, let's cut to the chase here. I don't care about horsepower, I care about noise! The neat little '94 Eunos I've bought is pretty tidy but it sounds about as exciting as a fridge. I drove another car which made a great, old-fashioned sports car noise apparently on a stock exhaust. I'm guessing this was the Arc Resonator induction kit under the bonnet.
So my question is.... what induction kit makes the best NOISE. I don't care about volume, I just want that lovely burbly character. Can I get it with just a cone filter? Or for the full effect am I going to have to shell out £300+ quid on something more elaborate that replaces everything upwind of the plenum (so to speak!)?
(by the way, no one's allowed to mention IRTB's, well... unless they know of a kit that only costs £300!)

Can't really comment on other types, but my 1.6 Mk1 has a Jackson racing airbox which makes an awesome noise, especially as it crosses over 4k RPM!
I have got a stainless cat back (Larini?) and a de-cat pipe on there now too, but the airbox makes the most noise by far. I think the JR airboxes are quite expensive though....

There are plenty of kits but by far the best for sound (and probably for performance, though the Arc is supposed to be pretty good too as is the Racing Beat) is the JR CAI. Forget the +14bhp claims though - you might get a couple of extra lb/ft of torques but that's about it unless you also replaced the full exhaust system and fitted a stand-alone ecu.
No idea about induction noise but I've recently fitted an MX5Parts stainless dual-exit pipe with a decat centre pipe to my 1.6, and it sounds absolutely brilliant!
Costs about £270 altogether (the decat pipe came from Moss Europe) so pretty cheap for a complete system, and worth every penny for the noise!

You have a mk1 so you could get the JR CAI, and a a claim of up to 14bhp increase! I have a K&N but it's more subtle than loud. The JRCAI is just over your budget but you might be able to get one second hand cheaper.
Why is that so expensive? :tybo said:

Why is that so expensive? :Thanks for the replies guys. Typical isn't it? The expensive one sounds best! I had thought about stainless exhausts, but I liked the induction noise. If I forgo the exhaust, I suppose I could fork out for the JR CAI... perhaps I'll delay fitting the lightweight flywheel, too! However, if fitting the induction doesn't give me that sports car noise, I was considering MX5parts single-exit exhaust as I don't fancy hack-sawing the bumper!
What about this carbon-fibre ITG kit ( http://www.performance5.com/na_airintake.asp ) on performance5.com? Or this Goodwin Monsterflow ( http://www.mx5mad.com/product_info.php?cPath=26_35... )on MX5mad ? Does anyone know anything about these? I read something online about the Goodwin reducing torque as it has no resonator box like the JR CAI and the standard set-up...
Thanks everyone - I'm starting to feel part of a community already!

Keep an eye on this thread. You never know what you might be able to pick up slightly cheaper!!

That's a 91 Eunos so a 1.6. ND has a 94 Eunos so that should be a 1.8. A 1.6 JRCAI won't fit a 1.8 because the AFM is a different shape.Gassing Station | Mazda MX5/Roadster/Miata | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
