Speakers, what do you have and what will fit the MK1
Discussion
Standard Speakers are 6.5" (165mm). Munter, yours sound like aftermarket ones.
I actually ordered some new ones for mine this evening, I picked up my MX5 on saturday and one speaker wasn't working, after removing the grilles it was obvious that they were original speakers rotted to hell. One speaker was working (but still rotted) and after swapping it to the other side confirmed that the wiring was working and it was just the speakers that had gone. They sounded very tinny as they were both not even attached to the outer speaker frame, so I guess the foam had dissolved.
I ordered these speakers: http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info.php/product... as they are meant to fit the Mk1 fine. I'm hoping that they will improve the sound quality a lot!

Very good advice!I have a Pioneer MP3 HU and cheapish (£70) Pioneer separates in the doors (6.5" mid/bass) powered by an even older Phillips DAP300 amp and have plenty enough bass for me.
Remember that it's a convertible so most of the bass will be drowned out when you are on the move, especially with the top down. It's a crap environment for music - even the dirt cheap rubbish in my Focus sounds better when driving.
Ok then, in my car there are a set of 16.5 kenwood units of the cheaper variety, the speakers are mounted with three screws to the door frame and then the Mazda speaker over the top with the Kenwood grill screwed on top.
Do people cut the Mazda panel and mount the speakers on the outside, mount them to the door frame and cut a bigger hole in the panel or has anyone managed to get 6x9s in there?
In my old MR2 MK1 there were four very small speakers and I kept these, turned the base all the way down so they performed better, I then added a tune up base unit from Pioneer and this was sat betwen the two seats on the back panel, brilliant job.

Sounds like a botch job! Are you saying that there are Kenwood speakers AND Mazda speakers in your doors?
Usually you'd just replace the Mazda speakers...
Oh, I see. That does sound... rubbish.
Just mount the speakers to the door metal. You shouldn't need to trim the door card even if the opening is smaller than the speaker. just make sure the speaker cone/roll can't come into contact with the door cover.
6"x9" has been fitted before as have 8" (In mk2, not sure about mk1) but you have to be very careful about speaker depth magnet size or it can foul the window mechanism.

6x9 or 8" on the rear deck (so pointing upwards) is more common. Pointing forwards like that you'd only get bass as they would be firing directly at the seats.
Their actually not that bad and do give out more than just bass ,as I said though its just to fill the old girl out a bit more ,I have similar in the Honda and knew roughly what I would get by doing it.Listen to your 8x9" speakers first .. no decent company makes them as they don't work accoustically.
You can get decent quality in there.. but 6.5" is enough.. build enclosures if you want more noise.
Oh .. Dynaudio 220 Mk2 components for me which are a real 5" that fit a 6.5" hole, needs a decent amp to drive and head unit to give the quality. Then use subs/rears to add bass as you will just end up shaking the door panels off with excees bass

why spend a fortune on dynaudio in a 5 ?
a good set of speaker with a freq response around 60hz upwards do good enough , amp them up and you will get a decent thump , the best bet in a 5 is dynamat the doors and reduce vibration in them , and amplify the speakers , you dont need to spend big bucks to get good sound .

Here's a pic of the ones in my doors. No idea what they are. If they are not standard they must have been added by a previous owner.

Judging by their colour they look like 'Fusion' - a big hit with the halfords brigade due to the colour! I've never heard them so can't comment on the sound.(Click for bigger)
