looking at buying a 92 eunos 1.6,

there are some bad points- its red and the paint has faded, few dinks and scratches, small area of rust bubbling (20p size) around one rear arch and a patch of rust on driver door sill. Engine sounds a little tappety, but I understand changing the oil will help here (engine oil was quite dark in colour). No service history. Its done just under 90k miles which isnt too bad.

price reflects the above, but would you stay clear? Looking to use it as weekend car and for a few trackdays.

The paint and dinks wouldn't bother me, but the rust might, depending on how severe and easily fixed it is frown

now seen a 96 1.8 mk1 with 100k on the clock. its a ltd edition uk car with leather seats if that makes any difference price wise.

Overall the car seems in good condition and also has a reasoanbly extensive main dealer service history (every 2-3 years mostly, but probabaly in line with mileage intervals). However, the sills have gone and its got the £40 quick cut and weld fix rather than the full seamless repair.

its up for £1900. Does that seems a fair price?? Sills might provide a bargaining point and i have read that some people dont mind buying with the bad sills because if they havent gone already, they soon will!

advice greatly appreciated

If the car has rotten sills it is not worth the hassle IMHO

Sound damn expensive to me - Last year I bought a 1992 Eunos for just under 2K and it's in excellent condition, not a spot of rust on it, no dents etc... I also bought a mostly rust-free project car for just £1200, again a 1992 mk1, with just the odd spot of surface rust (touch wood!). Given how prices have dropped etc.. £1900 for a car with knackered sills sound like a terrible price, even for a 96 1.8. If you buy a car with sound sills you can get it undersealed and waxoyled and never have to worry about it again.

i just cant get a handle on prices, they seem to be all over the place!

seen a couple of early 90's cars for low 2ks, a 96 1.8 with 180k miles for 1.8k and similar cars that seem mint seem to be pushing 2.4k.

Its for a weekend car plus bit of trackday use, so think i will wait to find a mk1 with 80-100k miles and strong mechanicals for £1400-1500. Anybody got one of these for sale??

I bought an L plate Eunos 1.8

No rust (that i've found) about 70k miles in white in good condition i reckon.

paid 1400 for it.

Found it in the local ad mag - try there peopl seem to put them in at more realistic prices I think.

Cheers

Dan

Eunos' are usually in better condition than MX-5s because they don't salt the roads in Japan, but insurance is more expensive. I have a 94 M plate Eunos 1.8 with no rust on it anywhere so it is possible to get one, and I've seen several for under 2k recently. If the sills are gone it's probably because the drain tubes are blocked. The 5 has an unusual way of draining water off the roof, it actually drains inside the car. If you look behind the seat belt turret there is a little tray with a drain hole in the bottom. If the pipe gets blocked the tray overflows and water flows into the sills, which of course causes rust. You can clear them out by rodding them with a lon pipe cleaner or similar.

Took the advice and checked the free ads. found a 92 1.6 eunos for £1300.

got there (100 miles away) and the bodywork was not in 'good condition' as descibed- issues with laquer on 3 wings. Was disappointed given distance i travelled but it had only done 82k, had a 4 month old hood, roll bar (looking to do track days), mot till july, new brake calipers and discs in 2007, and no rust except 2 tiny stone chips on rear arch and a bit of rust on drain channel around boot lid. Sills solid. Drove it away for £950.

Made it back home with no issues. Engine is a bit tappety but this cleared on the long run so i hope some full synthetic oil will cure it. Overall it seems sound and will hopefully prove to be a bit of a bargain.

A car for £950. With a few paint (rather than sill rust) problems. Sounds excellent!

if you don't care about it being concours (i.e. for day to day or track use, rather than for polishing) then you can get sill rust cut out and new panels welded in (they are not structural) quite cheap. i got mine done for £40 each side and my sills were gone very badly (MOT fail, big holes)
