For anyone still using the old sealed headlamp units on a mk1, buy a pair of halogen units such as these (http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info.php/products_id/202) - the difference is amazing for such a simple upgrade, makes those dark backroads much easier to drive on!

Took about an hour to swap them over, including fixing a broken plug, so very easy to do.

They're brighter on dipped than the sealed units are on main beam.

It's an upgrade I've been thinking of doing, but for some reason I missed those on mx5parts. I looked at the Crystal Clear headlamp, and it's about £3 dearer. Going by the description it's a aftermarket unit where as the one you specified seems to be a factory unit.

Anyone here have experience with both units?

I suspect they're both pretty similar, but either of them is going to be a massive improvement over the old ones - it's a mod I wish I'd done sooner.

Easy to fit?

I'm fed up of straining to see in the dark.

Yes, so long as the 3 little screws are not rusted away to nothing. To check you can simply popup the headlights and remove the 4 black screws (2 on each side of the headlight "pod") that hold the black plastic trim covers in place - you'll then be able to see the retaining ring - there are 2 larger screws (one to the side, one bottom) that are for the headlight aim adjust - don't touch those ones. There are also 3 small screws that hold the retaining ring in place - so long as these can be undone then you're OK - undo them, pull off the retaining ring and the headlight will fall out - plug in the new one and replace the screws, then replace the black plastic trim covers and that's it.

The screws on mine were badly corroded so I cut a groove into them with a Dremel to allow removal with a flat-blade screwdriver, then got a bag of replacements from a local bolt supplier, cost about £2.50 for a bag of 20 (I like to have spares!)
