£3k? Should get an OK MK1 for that. 54,000 for the cambelt. And yes up to the MK3 (current model) thay are non-interferance.
However as I found out. The cam belt tensioner may well give up before the belt and make lots of noise.
Edit: I'd fancy this one. http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/787515.htm

I bought my silver '91 Eunos off pistonheads classifieds for the sum of £650. I've put approx 6k miles on it in the year I've owned it, initially as a 2nd car but for the last couple of months as a DD since I lost my job and company car. It came with 10mths MOT, a couple of months tax, chrome style bars (Not my taste but sell for £300+ on ebay!), Jackson Racing intake which I understand is the one to have, Larini cat back, and a rather poor repair on the o/s rear quarter. The only money I have spent on it is having the cambelt changed(Car came with zero s/h), I changed the waterpump at the same time, and lots of fuel!! Has been absolutley faultless, enormous fun, and I love it to bits. Took it to Le-Mans 24 hr last year in a little convoy, all stickered up and it was excellent and got loads of attention. I even got herded into some show outside of the town, some sort of breakfast meet or something where they put my car on display with loads of exotica which was crazy! One of the only cars I have ever had which you can take out for a midnight top down hoon for absolutely no reason whatsoever. Have never kept a car this long before, used to trade cars so would only keep them a couple of months at most, but I can't see myself getting rid of this one until it suffers some sort of terminal failure. This itself is starting to present a problem because I have got an itch for a new car, but can't think of anything that would even come close to doing all the things the little Mazda does so well. Went to Ace last week and my dad said I could take his 996 Cab, turned him down because my little Roadster is genuinely more fun to steer.
Sorry for the essay, as you can tell I'm in luurve.....

This red Mk1 has been for sale on PlanetMX5 for ages. It started at about £1500 and is now down to £800. I was in two minds about posting this as I'm very close to making the decision to buy it myself. Thing is, I don't really need it seeing as I already have a Mk2.5 and a Focus but it's just such a bargain...

Generally a grand is not enough as cars at that price need things doing.
I also costs more to get a tatty one 'nice' rather than buying a nice one in the first place.
However if you are really lucky perhaps you might find something.
Go look at a few and report back.
