What track days are you doing in 2009 then?
Discussion
Morning all,
Having done my first two track days at Brands Indy, I'm hooked so have been going through the diary to book up some more for 2009 at different circuits.
Being a track day newbie with a basic MX5, I'm trying to avoid the power-circuits with 1/2 mile straights as the little 1.8 doesn't have a huge amount left to give above 100mph - so I'm looking for the twisties.
Anyhow, I asked this question on the trackday forum and Jonny from BookaTrack lindly listed in order (in his opinion) which tracks may suit the lower powered cars. It was very helpful for me so I thought I'd share it with you. Feel free to add in any other tracks / events you've done that suited the MX5 well.
In order of preference for lower-powered cars
Anglesey (National)
Anglesey (Coastal)
Rockingham (National)
Mallory Park
Brands Indy
Cadwell Park
Rockingham (International)
Anglesey (GP)
Croft
Oulton Park
Donington
Brands GP
Silverstone (National/International)
Bedford
Castle Combe
Snetterton
Silverstone GP
Thruxton
Goodwood
Cheers,
Matt

Personally I have a hatred or Castle Coombe. Just not enough fun, too much right turn and a corner that's more dangerous than the available fun requires.
I love Bedford GT but I do have a fair bit more power now.
The old Anglesey track was superb and perfect for MX-5s. It's good to see it's still good for slower cars.
It's a bit out of the way for most of us but Knockhill is also a great track for MX-5s.
Remember, it doesn't have to be a track to be a track day. The best fun I've had have been on airfield days at Woodbridge and Abingdon and I'll be at Colerne on 23rd Feb

I'm doing Abingdon on 27th Feb with MSE, best airfield I've been to (also very local which is handy). Done Bruntingthorpe & Colerne as well, in the MR2 for both of those though. Did Castle Combe & Goodwood in the MX5, I like Combe, Goodwood I didn't enjoy until it started to dry out and i'd learnt it (felt all morning was a chore), but then did start to like it by the end of the day.
Depends what sort of driving you like, I hate learning tracks. I want to go fast on them and push and you can't do that until you've learnt them, I felt Goodwood took some learning. Not helped in the format they run, basically you drive it blind so have to work out all the lines yourself, no pace cars to follow, not even a "car in front" to follow as your all spread out by the traffic light system.

Which corner? Quarry, presumably? I love Bedford GT but I do have a fair bit more power now.

Agree on the airfield day thing, and actually quite tempted with Colerne in Feb although I might be moving house around then. Might pop along to watch if I'm free.

Yeah, seen too many crashes there. Never seen more than the odd crash anywhere else. It's all because of the slight left over the crest before the corner unsettling the car and being off-camber around Quarry combined with very little run-off. Doesn't help that may car will easily be doing 120mph by the time it gets to the crest...
Yeah, I was touching about 105 (indicated, so I guess 95ish) at the braking point, would be higher if I had the balls to take on Camp with a bit more conviction. I used to marshall at Combe and the "proper" accidents at Quarry can be epic. combe is ok when there's a bunch of you, bit boring blatting round by yourself.
donny was great, glad i went before the F1 came along
anglesey (old) was good, quite short but some nice corners. long way to go tho for me
bedford i got a bit bored by the end of the day but it was quite good, esp for a first track day
llandow (airfield) was ok for the morning, got bit bored in the afto as it's not a real circuit.
cadwell was awesome tho it's a long circuit and takes a bit of time to get to grips with. scary in the wet!
hopefully i'll do at least one this year. quite fancy oulton park or silverstone when my car gets a bit faster. might try my local (abingdon) too if i can get it cheap

Does that run on the sprint track or?I'm looking for something to do around then.
Cheers.
I have some video of Abingdon here so you can get an idea of what it will be like.

Any airfields around south yorkshire?

Dan - yup, elvington is jsut over an hour from Sheffield, south of York. It will be my first trackday too I think, been to watch a few times.
Javelin trackdays run them up there - loads of run off, not too huge a course, lots of beginners, good value I think. Once I'm happy with the alignment and brakes on my car I'm gonna book on.
