Tonight I had to fit the space saver wheel on our MX5 as the Mrs had managed to lodge a bolt through one of the rear tyres. Not a problem, I thought. Fit the spare, chuck the alloy with the flat in the boot and get it repaired and refitted tomorrow.

There was a problem, the frigging wheel wouldn't fit in the boot. Not even with the boot carpet removed and trying to fit the wheel in the spare's recess. Not a massive problem as I'll just take the wheel down the garage tomorrow by sitting it in the passenger seat.

Here's my dilemma. In the summer we'll be going on holiday in the car. It will be quite a long drive, Newcastle to south Cornwall. What would I do should I have a puncture while on that run? I could fit the spare but then have nowhere to put the damaged wheel untill I get it fixed. The passenger seat would then be occupied by the Mrs and the dog. I don't think they'd be too happy sharing with a dirty wheel. The boot would be full of luggage even if I could fit the wheel in there.

Do I even bother taking the spare with us and use the extra space created for luggage and chuck in a foot pump and a can of puncture repair thingy? Would I still be able to get a punture repair carried out if the tyre was now full of the repair gunk?

What says you?scratchchin

Try sticking it on the rear shelf.

Although I have recently found Holts Tyre weld works a treat, it won't work on blow outs etc.

I always have a tin of the foam in the boot. But also now I have another solution for when the wheel (or other items) do not fit in the boot.

when I am going on long trips to trackdays (eg to the nurburgring or a weekend trip to anglesey) i take the spare out of the boot and take a full size spare wheel which I sit ontop of the boot lid using a ratchet strap and some non-slip matting.

that way i get more boot space and can happily keep on using the car properly if i do get a puncture rather than having to travel slowly and needing to find a tyre fitters urgently.

luckily I have 4 spare wheels and tyres (the original 14 inch ones).
