Christian - I think I may have chatted with you before at a Railway meet in Leeds - am I thinking of the right person?

If so, you can have a look round mine at the next one, or at some point in the near future. I just bought it a couple of months ago for £1650, pretty representative of whats out there.

We found ours on Auto Trader.

1995 Mk 1 1.8, UK original, unmolested, very nice condition apart from some bubbling paint on the offside rear wheelarch and needing a replacement hood for winter use. Very nice MP3 hi-fi. Immobiliser. Excellent service history with cam-belt change.

2.3k

My 5 was just a shade under £2k. Spec is as follows:

98' MX5 Berkeley, no. 377/400
3 previous owners (2 of which enthusiasts at mx5oc)
85K mileage
Jackson Racing Cold Air Intake
SS Powerflow Exhaust
Mk2 1.8iS Alloys
Goodyear F1's all round

Drives spot on and the hood is leak free and in great condition.

2k-2.5k will buy you a nice Mk1 and possibly a decent early Mk2 (not too clued up on on Mk2s I'm afraid).

You should get a a good standard or mildly modded car for that sort of money, if you're looking for something with forced induction you're looking at around 3k for something that "just works". I've just paid around 2.7k for a turbo'd MX5 with quite a lot of mods, but that already has had several hundred thrown at it by me (mostly service stuff) and needs probably another 500, but that's partially because I don't agree with some of the previous owner's mods.

Nearly forgot to mention - with the Mk1, buy on the condition of the body. Unfortunately the neglected ones can and do rust, which is expensive to put right.

That's the one. Area Coordintor for OC West London Region.
The JRCAI used to be fitted to my old Berkeley. I sold it to Bob and fitted it for him when I sold my car.
Do the tappets still rattle or has that been sorted now?

The tappets still exist but very intermittent, it's my daily so rarely does it tbh and goes after a couple minutes.

So you're the culprit who fitted the JR CAI :P Apparently it hadn't been wired properly and caused idling problems, even stalling. It's been fixed though, and is a great addition to the car!

I think the JRCAI was probably removed and refitted when Bob had the cam-belt changed tongue out

The tappets rattled badly when he had it because he used to drive it less than 3 miles a day in heavy London traffic. His Mk1 1.6 before that was the same. I thought it would probably be fine once it got some regular proper driving and a few oil changes smile
Has the "walnut trim" been replaced yet? It went the same way as mine i.e. the lamination was lifting as they always did on Berkeleys.
Still beautiful cars though, I'd love to have another Berkeley thumbup

No, I've decided the interior looks quite clean without the walnut trim although admittedly I've never seen it with it on!

Here's a pic of it:
