Ok, positive to the battery, but negative to where... Chassis under the boot?

Well you could just put it onto the negative batt post (tricky though I guess) - so go for a shiny bolt somewhere in the boot that makes contact with the bodywork, say like one of the shock absorber bolts (not the middle one on the shock itself though)

Underneath it'll more or less all be painted/rusty or both...

If you can avoid it, the battery is easy enough to get out, whip it out and charge it for a couple of hours?

Actually, thinking about it, the tail pipe should have a semi reasonable connection to the engine ground...

I used the neg terminal on the battery. I dont remember it being too tricky.

Not that I make a habit of it....boxedin
