Squeaky Clutch (pedal?)
Discussion
Hi, our recently acquired Mk1 1.8 has a squeak. It is noticeable from inside and outside the car when manoeuvring. The clutch action is fine and there appear to be no mechanical issues when driving.
Is it likely to be lubrication is required somewhere? Is it a cable or hydraulic clutch?
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Can't offer any advice I'm afraid, but I have exactly the same problem so I'm eagerly awaiting responses from the resident experts.Is it likely to be lubrication is required somewhere? Is it a cable or hydraulic clutch?

It's a hydraulic clutch - the slave cylinder sits on the side of the bellhousing low down on the driver's side, and can be seen (just) either by peering past the inlet manifold or feeling up from underneath, and easiest of all I think if you take the front right wheel off you can see it past the subframe.
The cylinder has a small shiny metal rod that pushes on the clutch arm, and the end of this is a common source of squeaks - put a large blob of grease on it and work the clutch and see if the squeak stops. If not it must be from some part of the clutch inside the bellhousing.
<Note : this is for a mk1 1.6 - the 1.8 might have differences?>

I have this problem as well! very annoying. Thanks for the tip though, I'll give it a go this weekend..
Also, seeing as I've started, My clutch bite point is at the very end of the travel, feels like the last few centimetres as you are releasing it, and then it bites. Does anyone have any ideas why this may be, and how to remedy it?
Thanks all

I thought this myself, and the car went to the local MX5 specialist type chap, who reported that the clutch was working fine, it just had a very high bite point? Out of interest how much am I looking at roughly for a replacement clutch? The car is on 80K miles now, so I think it will need one soon anyhow...
Thanks
