My Eunos has developed a really bad smoking habbit on cold startup, starts okay, then 5 seconds later it gets a bit lumpy and smokes like hell for a couple of minutes then clears up. Smoke is white (and bloody loads of it!), smells more fuel than oil, plugs are black but not oily. Didn't start gradually smoking, just one morning it was fine, next not. No mayo in the head, the head is brand new (hg failure when i bought it, had new head, water pump & cambelt), no nasty noises, haven't taken it for a run to check the oil cosumption & it isnt using water.
Once it gets some heat in it it is fine. Can't decide if its bust an oil ring (but no blue smoke when warm) or some fueling issue, or maybe a HG failure again (but doesnt overheat, left it running for 20mins stationary with no issues) I did try disconnecting all the breathers from the manifold to see if it was some crank case pressure thing but no change. It does have a K&N cone filter but other than that is standard.
Any suggestions before I look for another engine?

I wouldn't dicsount head problems yet. My crack in the head did something similar, no real loss of coolant (perhaps only noticeable every few weeks), and generally cold starts led to the white smoke and lumpy running.
Do you get any slight 'gurgling' from the heater?

I doubt it'll show up as a compression issue, it'll be such a small leak.
Basically, if it only smokes after cold starts, and it's not oil related (i.e. oil running down through leaky stem seals), I'd be very suspicious of a top end water leak.
The other symptom I had was it only starting on two cylinders, but normally a quick rev would 'clear its throat'

It probably dropped half a teaspoon of water into one of the cylinders overnight. Best tip I can think of is to doa simple test one morning after you have used it the night before.
Take all the plugs out, disconnect the injector connector (on a 1.6 this is at the back end of the inlet manifold) and get someone to crank the engine while observing - I guess if there is water in there it would likely throw some out through the plug hole.

Hmm, well retorqued the head, a couple weren't up to spec, cleaned the plugs and went out for a trash. It smoked really bad for a mile or so, then cleared up. Worrying think is there is still some soot in the exhaust and oil sat on the piston crowns. No blue smoke though. The piston tops are wet immediatly after stopping the engine and the plugs have sooted up slightly but no blue smoke!
Where is the oil coming from? If rings I wouldn't expect to see it sat on the piston crown when you stop the engine?

So white smoke must have been water weeping into one of the bores (! find out for sure in the morning)due to a loosening head bolt. Just need to see if the head is a duff one now, 8ugger
