Well after weeks (feels like years) of trawling through classified ads, ringing about half a million people and having numorous wasted journeys I have finally bagged myself and absolute gem of an MX-5!

I decided to put a 'wanted' notice on pistonheads which read,

Good, solid, well looked after MK1 MX-5 wanted, prefably 1.8, but would consider 1.6. Must be manual, not too fussy about colour, but must be well looked after and in top condition. Don't want anything with more than 100k on it. Cash waiting for right one......

I received numerous responses, most of which were the opposite to what I was looking for accept one!

"I have a 1990 1.6. Just put away for the winter. Summer use only.loads of extras like leather, roll bars, chrome, alloys. little use last few years but if someone wants it it can go. If you want some photos let me know."
John, Grimsby

After receiving some pics, I arranged to look at it. What a great car, its a 1990 1.6 import with full leather, air con and some nice chrome bits and pieces. The thing that blue me away was the condition! Not a spec of rust anywhere and the paint felt like glass to touch. (It's been resprayed I hear you cry!) But no, I honestly don't think it has, as there are the odd very minor imperfections when you look closely, all the panels match perfectly and no sign of over spray.

The car, well started it up from cold and it purred like a kitten, it idled nicely and sounded great, I couldn't wait to take it for a spin! The drive was just as I'd hoped, fantastic!!

After trying to knock the RELUCTANT seller down and a rather nice cup of tea, the deed was done. Money exchanged hands and the paperwork was sorted. In addition to the car it came with a set of 'original' alloys with good tyres and a spare rear window. I paid £1825 whole english pounds which I think is worthe every penny! The oil was like clear honey and the cambelt was replaced by a mazda dealer earlier this yeae, so hopefully no issues there!

I was determined to drive home (approx 75 miles) with the roof down come rain or shine! And thats exactly what I got with some strong winds thrown in for good measure!! I had a fair bit of rain on the way back but I didn't care! I had my hat on and was behind the wheel of my new '5! By the time I got home it was actually dark. It was great blasting along the twisty roads with the roof down, loved it!

The car drives extremely well and feels a lot newer than a '90 car.

All I need to do now is join the MX-5 owners club and go for a real blast!

I really want to post some pics but don't know how to, so please let me know?! I've seen this, but doesn't make sense?? Do you type this....?

My only regret? Wish I'd bought one sooner!!!

Forgot to mention it also came with a private plate, 'FXI 5000' love them or loathe them, its got to be worth a few quid, and I actually think its quite cool and really suits the car.......

Very nice, body work looks in great nick from the photo. I can remember how chuffed I felt the first day I picked mine up - the grin has never really left me biggrin. If I have to drive any other car it's always a joy to get back into mine.

The bodywork looks just as good in the flesh. I was dubious as sometimes pictures can be deceiving but it genuinely is in great shape!

I wanted a mariner (smurf) blue mx5 when i was looking , was going to go with flared arches in gloss black , white 5 spoke wheels , and a proper roll cage. white dots on the doors as well , they do look good as track sgs .

Damn, that engine bay is cleaner than mine eek

I bought a 1990 red one too, paid a very similar price, as well!

Those seats look lovely. How much would a retrim cost? smile

The famous Jack Smiths in Swansea quoted me £350 fitted for new red leather for mine.
