I'm adding so many more bits to my list of jobs that it's going to take me months to get it all sorted.
We need to replace the speakers in the car which sound terrible (and look like they are falling apart).... any recommendations?
Currently running an Alpine MP3 CD head unit thing.

Are they the ones in the headrests (only on imports) - if so you can get stock again or alternatively a bit of cutting and fiddling gets some better mainstram small multi-way speakers in here. Don't forget you'll need two pairs for this... (see mxparts.co.uk for an example pair)
If they are the door ones - I can't remember the size, think it may be 6", but do check! They can be removed and replaced by merely removing the grill plate, then they come out from the car side. They do have 3 screws for holding them in their place, so eitehr you'll need to make new holes in the door or the speaker basket. If you are drilling/filing/cutting the speaker then beware! I always wrap it in a rubber glove first as the iron filings you create will magnetise themselves into some non speaker friendly locations!

Yep, 6" or 6.5" will fit. Don't bother going for anything expensive though - MX-5s are a poor environment for speakers and you won't hear any difference between £40 speakers and £200 speakers. The one way you can improve things a little is to fit components where the mid-bass is in the standard position and the tweeters are high on the doors or on the dash. You'll still struggle to hear much bass once you are on the move though.
If your speakers are falling part in the doors then it could be due to water ingress. Are they wet? If it is water ingress you'll want to get that sorted before you change the speakers. I foolishly didn't get round to sorting the water ingress out and 1 month after fitting new speakers one seems to have blown. D'oh!

It looks like the foam around the speaker cone has just got very old and has just dried out. The speaker on the drivers side hasn't coped well with loud volume so is a bit crackly hence looking at replacements!

Sounds like a plan to me... what's good in terms of amps/speakers these days?Put it this way - the £50 (if that) 10 year old radio cassette running through stock speakers with no amp in my 99 Focus sounds a hell of a lot better than the £250 Pioneer MP3 stereo, £130 Pioneer 2-way separate speakers and 150W Phillips amp in my MX-5. Like I said before, it's really not worth spending good money on a stereo in an MX-5.
If you can get 6x9s fitted in the parcel shelf and power them with an amp that will help but it's still not worth fitting expensive speakers unless you plan to do all your listening while parked in a garage.
