I thought I would have a look at why the passenger window has been slow ever since we got it.

Took the door card off and had a poke around and couldn't see anything amiss so sprayed back to black along the rubber surrounds (apparently the silicone in it is a good way of getting the windows running smoothly) but with no success.

Any suggestions?

After all the rain we've had recently I also seem to have a wet parcel shelf again - grr. Cleaned out the drain holes just in case and we'll have to see how it goes.

you could have a dead rain rail , remove the carpet off the rear deck and you will see it , then sit in and get the missus to hose you down .

Window.
The motor could be on its last legs , its best to clean all the crap out of the tracks that the window runs in and relube with lithium grease .

Whats the best way to check the motor? A neighbour has a similar problem and I think he has a volt meter checky thing. What sort of power should it be getting?

The window seems to be running smoothly at some points but it's a bit stuttery when the window is half way up/down.

My window runs fine down to about 1/3rd of the way, then on mega-go-slow for the middle third, and won't go past that.

I'm guessing that it's just the runners that need greasing, etc.

The runners probably need lubricating with silicone grease but another possible problem is dirty contacts on the switches. I've no experience of it myself but I've heard that in a lot of cases cleaning the contacts can help.

Be careful with it as it is a design fault on the earl mk1's. Next, the cable will snap and you'll need to replace the complete motor including the cable. Just leave it be or, better, replace it for new.

Well I wound down the window this morning and it's much quicker.

Usually the fault is that the cables are corroded or damaged.

I've never had any success greasing the runners etc but its easy to try (especially with spray grease)

The cables are a PITA and expensive for what they are.

I've never had to replace a motor but TBH I'm tempted to try the replacement worm drive units as the cables are so frustrating.

My Mk.1 had slow windows.

I bought this:

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/...

Sprayed some into the window runners and it made a BIG difference. Both windows now go up and down with ease.

The three steps that solved my slow windows:
  • lubed the rubber window channels with silicone grease
  • lubed the metal runners inside the door with lithium grease
  • took apart the motor, replaced the little nylon drum thingy, relubed it all with more lithium grease and stuck it back together
My windows positively fly up and down now smile

I did all that to my personal car.

I even changed to a new switch.

Mine are still slow.
