I'm thinking of buying an MX5 1800 around 2002 on. Could anybody tell me if there are any particular problems with the model or things to look at on a viewing. I know the're not particularly earth shattering on the performance side but I am a confirmed rag top merchant and have heard good things re reliability and generally like the 'cut of its jib'.

Reliability should be fine and there aren't ant real problems with a car of this age. One thing you should look out for though is clutch-judder. This can manifest itself when pulling away at normal road speeds and is usually worse reversing. You can "drive around it" and it's not a sign of any sort of failure but it is bloody annoying. Fixing it means a new clutch.

Other than that they are pretty well bullet-proof. If anything doesn't seem right just walk away, there are plenty of them about.

Check it doesn't leak (the soft top). It's quite annoying if it does. Especially when it only leaks when it feels like it...!

I have a mk 2.5, never had a prob, no judders etc, supper reliable, maybe not as fast as I'd like, I come from bikes so it seems slow, the most amazing gear box, they just feel so good, Jeramy Clarkson said,"everyone should own an mx5 at some point". I love it to bits.
Might have to sell it, as my job's goin down the pan, only done 33k miles,04 £5k if ya feelin rich.
Bike or the cars got to go, which ever I sell 1st I keep the other, have to admit, I hope the bike sells.
