It is indeed just a facelift, but with a few mechanical changes too. Likely to be a Mk3.5 as Fruitcake says.

Outside of this, I spoke to Mazda who have hinted that the new car will feel a bit sportier than the Mk3, although couldn't say for definite when it would come out, other than 'in the new year'.

I've put in an expression of interest in the 3.5 and have had the following response:

Dealer said:

I have now received confirmation that the facelifted MX-5 will be available from us in April 2009
