There are no stupid question, only stupid answers wink
The tonneau and hard-top can't be used together. You can put the cover over the hood if you like but you won't be able to hook it over the retaining edge.
I think nuts

At least in my Mk1, I just fold down the roof (preferably when it's dry...) and put the h/t on.

Yes, just make sure that the hood is really dry before you fold it down. I always put a coating of Auto Glym Bumper Care (for vinyl hoods) on mine. After 9 years the hood is still in good nick.

Hmmm, personally, I would remove it, not sure how they stand up to being 'creased' for long periods.

I've not got a hard top for my MX5, but I did have for the Spitfire, and (when I bothered to put the HT on) removed the leather ST, and put it on a 'bench' in the garage unfolded, and gave it a deep soak of wax.

A hard what? Pffft....what to do you want one of those for?? what about when its a gorgeously crisp sunny winters morning? Just perfect for a wooly hat blast around.

Don't tell me you have a wind blocker too?

biggrin hehe! I'm only joking with you. spin

Actually, while you might be joking, you've made a very good point. I've had MX-5s for over 10 years and never felt the need for a HT. Yes I wanted one in the early years, mostly because Berkeleys look damn good with them but I never really needed one as the heater works better in these cars than any other car I've ever driven and the soft-top is very good as long as it's in good condition. I probably have the top down as much in the winter as I do in the summer.

The picture below was taken on a particularly cold frosty January morning with freezing fog making driving... interesting biggrin

Soft top! what soft top? got rid of mine ages ago, I now have a hard top only. Yes, it's a bugger when you're caught in a 'light' shower and all that, but mine is in the loft and that is where it will stay.

A hard top makes a HUGE difference to structural rigidity and losing the soft top shaves 30lbs or so in weight.

I have to ask.......what did you buy a sporty 2 seater convertible, only to put a hard top on it?
Like those damn wimmen i see that never have the top down no matter how hot it is in fear that they might mess up their hair.
Personally i'd prefer 'convertible hair' and i have found out (through trial and error) which styles get least ruffled or take the least putting back straight.
As i said before....pfffft. My top only really gets put up when i put it away in the garage so it'll strighten out the creases again.
I want a sticker that says ''hard tops and wind blockers are for poofs''

I didn't. I got a sporty 2 seater thats cheap to run. No lid is a bit of a downside but can be lived with. I'd sooner have no lid than FWD.

So you see. 2 people can do the same things for totally different reasons. Shouldn't go around jumping to conclusions! smile

wow, i seem to have started a bit of a debate here havent i ??

the only reason i have the hard top is cos the dealer had it from the last owner and i got it cheap! I thought maybe if we get loads of snow it may damage or stain the fabric of the soft top ? dunno...
I'll give it a bash maybe next month and if it's too boring i'll hang it back up. As for a nice woolly hat in the winter months, i can dig out my lovely WEST HAM beanie to keep my receeding suede warm on those crisp January mornings! But then again, i might just use the wifes car to avoid any skating on ice exhibitions on the M25 !!

Top

No Top

My car isn't a daily driver so the lack of a soft top doesn't make much difference to me. I prefer the look of the car with the hardtop, it handles significantly better and is better insulated. The difference is very noticeable without the hardtop as the car squeaks and rattles and scuttle shake is marked.

Each to there own I guess

cool

I had to put the hart-top on when the soft-top was damp. I work offshore and the last time I came back from 3 weeks of the car sat at the airport it was damp and smelly inside. Smell disappeared after a couple of sunny topless roadtrips.

But it was raining when I put the hartop on (I had no choice- only opportunity) so on all the drives since I had the heater on full and blasting at full fan. Inside of the car got very warm and I made sure the air was circulating a lot. The next sunny day at home I will remove the hard top and let it breath for a bit.

Not ideal. But might I be damaging my soft-top?
