Need to drain the cooling system and get the starter off and undo the 3 bolts at the manifold/downpipe join , and then flippin startermotor , what a stupid place for it , what an enjoyable job ....not
currently looks like this tonight under the bonnet , all the looms have been undone and put to the side bar the alternator and starter loom.

Good to see im not the only one having engine trouble! Unfortunately I'm not mechanically gifted however so heres the situation.
Burning far too much oil (and petrol for that matter, mpg is about 20-25 and thats driving sensibly!), and the worst thing is a massive loss of power, it now drives like a 1.0 rather than a 1.8.
Is it worth getting someone to take it apart and checking if its something fixable, or does it sound like replacement engine is in order...?
Any thoughts at all are welcome,

Start with the easy things, get a compression tester (Better borrowed, or they seem to be £18 in Halfords) - and see what it's like.
If it does come up low on any cyclinders, drop a teaspoon of oil down the plug hole, then retry. If compression comes back up it's a worn bottom end, if not then it's a top end (valve) problem - and may be worth a fix.
There are other tests too, like that the O2 sensor is working, what are the plugs like, and off course the self destructicon HT leads...
...a quick look at the plugs will tell a lot too, can you whip one out and post a pic?

Well after much faffing about , starter and alternator are out manifolds undone coolant drained rad removed and apart from a few bolts on the bellhousing its all ready to come out
the replacement engine now has the injector/coil loom fitted and im blanking the EGR off again .

You might as well remove the inlet manifold also so you can leave the fuel lines attached - just undo the bolts/nuts and swing it round 180 degrees so it can rest on the inner wing. This also makes attaching the engine to the crane easier as there's less in the way.

replacement sat back in and bolted down
almost there
apart from the CAS failing on the replacement engine (took 15 mins to refit the old) this engine is so much smoother and quieter than the old lump it had in it . next jobs are undersealing the car , and replace the slave cylinder on the clutch as thats been leaking

Burning oil and just sounds grumbly , i think the oil ring has gone on no.4 but compression tests show good (175psi cold) so ive had a spare engine sat about so im bunging it in hoping its ok as its come out of a rolled car .
Make sure you turn it back the right way up then before putting it in BB
