Well, nearly.
39.00 mpg tank average driving through France.
Once I got to the roads I know further south this soon lowered, although 1/2 a tank cruising and 1/2 tank fast road still produced an overall average of 36mpg!
'96 1.8 Merlot.
PS. Not sure why, but you'd think the '5 was a Ferrari or Lamborghini the way the French took to it. Drive through a town and everyone stares. Even out on the open road workmen would stop and stare. Park it in a supermarket car park to lots of stares and come out an hour later to a few people gathered around it!

Good work!
I've been experimenting with how much I can eke out of my 90 Eunos (1.6) - despite gaining a 25% increase from 27 to 33 mpg ave for a tank (using extreme economy measures...) - although looks liek I'm up for beeting this with 65 mph dual carriageway driving and avoiding use of brakes...
I rememeber when I was interested in how fast cars would go...

well I put in £47 quid which was a full tank a couple of weeks ago and I got 340 miles out of it, mostly motorway driving.
which I reckon is about 38MPG or so. About half of this was with the top down so I don't know if this increased drag or not - I was quite impressed with it anyway.
