New Joiner: Looking to buy an MX-5

I just joined this forum! Been looking at it for a while now but finally got round to joining!

Anyway, I am looking to buy an MX-5 for around 5k, Ive got my eye on a Racing Green 1.8i from 2001. Are there any other models/things i should think about?

The 1.8i is the base UK spec car. I personally would try and find a 1.8 iS of the same age which will come with the LSD and a few other bits and bobs as standard. Engine's exactly the same though.

Also I'd be looking at the imports rather than the UK models to get more for my money....

Really? Would I not have trouble getting insurance on the imports?

If you're very young possibly. But otherwise from what people say it's not much more to insure an import. But you are more likely to get nice features.

I am 22, and getting quotes of around 800 on the 1.8i. Don't really want more than 1000 on insurance.

If you are talking about a 2001 (so therefore a Mk2.5) then I wouldn't bother looking for an import, there are hardly any of them at that age.
Also a 2001 1.8i does come with plenty of goodies, it's just that 1.8 Sport (not 1.8iS - that's Mk1/2) has a few extra goodies i.e. bigger brakes, heated leather seats, additional bracing, LSD etc.

Dow I thought 01 was still a MK2.

Ok gents, I am off to have a look at a couple this evening. Both Mk2.5, one in racing green and one in black. Both 2001/2002 ish.

Thanks for the information. I guess, given Lazza's comments, I wont sit around waiting for an import. Not that fussed.

My Mk2.5 is a 2001 51 reg. To be fair though they were introduced during 2001 so there must be some 2001 Mk2s out there.
