I quite often see MX-5s with vinyl sticker front plates, rather than a hard plate in a frame.

Are these actually legal? They are clear to read, but are the stickers reflective enough? Do people who have them get pulled?

I've never been pulled for it. Even when I had a non reflective one a traffic cop used it to read the plate to control after an accident.

Potentially if they put the rule back inthe MOTs that they have to meet all the criteria for the British Standard then yes it might fail an MOT. But from the police point of view so long as its the right size and font and spacing and they can read it. I dont think they care.

if my MOT station wanted to be really anal they could fail me on mine. but it's been on for a few years and no probs. i even went speeding past a policeman who quickly turned around and chased me (by which time i had slowed down a bit) and he followed me and then got bored when he saw that i was a good boy. basically i've never got pulled up on it and don't expect to.

Never had any problem with mine either and lots of police have seen it.

It's all to the correct font and spacing so someone would have to be anal to do me for it.

Read this thread. It should answer your question - apparently the rules about numberplates were relaxed a while ago.

Certainly, mine passed its MOT in May without any problems.

I heard they had changed the rules to be more harsh, good to know. My brother has no issues with his sticky plate.

I have had a sticker number plate on my car for the last 19 months I have not had any trouble with mine I brought my car like this but if you dont already have one dont bother getting one as after lots of washes they will begin to come away.

yikes How hard are you scrubbing your car!

Mine had been on for 3 years and was still very firmly attached until I replaced the bumper... smile

A stick on plate should NOT come off after a bit of washing. Mine get washed very regularly and I even scrub it with a rough sponge designed to remove fly-splats and it's still fine. Maybe you just had a rubbish one?
