Took my Mk1 in for its MOT today and she's failed on massive emmissons. They seem to think the Cat has gone. How long to they normally last for? Also, am i looking at around £150 to replace it?

OUCH!! Sorry to hear that...

BUT...i'm looking to de-cat mine...MOT was done in December and had it tested again just after I bought it and it flew through emissions...got the report somewhere..

Maybe we could work something out? Also know an MOT tester local to me?

ETA - if it'll fit...

Thanks, but i only have 10 working days to get it fixed. Just wondered if anyone had any problems with emissions as my dad seems to think the cat is quite far back

Blimey. Even cheaper at www.japparts4less.co.uk (£45)

Almost seems too good to be true confused

Buy from MX-5 parts and fit straight away. You can read feedback on their site and they let the nasty comments be seen....

Fitting it isn't easy though. Imagine it being located roughly mid way along the door, but on the passenger side of the gearbox. If it's a Mk1 that has lived a little, i'd buy four bolts and a lot of exaust paste or similar. The original bolts will be rusted to high-heaven in all probability.

And don't sheer a bolt or round a nut off when doing it otherwise you'll be kippered, soak it all in lots of WD40 for a couple of hours before you begin.

Good luck.

The cat is midway along the system , ive got a decat pipe to put back on mine after the next mot , how far out were your emmisions ? mine were over chucked a bottle of cataclean down its neck and gave it a flippin good thrashing , just sneaked under , nothing wrong with the car , tis odd .

You will need to measure the cat on your car ,it shold be a 440mm .

also try uniprat...part , they might have one cheaper smile

thanks for the advice guys. Whats the difference between the mx5 parts one for £156 and the other for £62? Is it going to be completely shoddy? Humph, i don't think i've EVER had a car go through the bd MOT first time.

I doubt there is much in it TBH , you may also need a new o2 sensor aswell , also try and get some cataclean to throw down its neck , do it withabout 1/4 of a tank in ,

BTW mine cost jsut under £500 last year to get through !

Yeah had thought about the O2 sensor, thats only 20 quid so thats no problem. Would i still need to put some cataclean in with a new cat?

It cleans the cimbustion chambers etc apparently and helps get the emmisions down .

Er, please don't because since the electronic MOT system, your car is now logged with VOSA as failed and if you get a tug from the old bill you will get a ticket. And be driving round uninsured.

Hmm, MX5's (in talking to the MOT tester who did mine 2 years back) are known for flying through MOT's. Mine only failed last time on rear discs, and to be fair I had a warning from the year before...

Ciderminx - what year is your car? Pre-92 is legal to not have a cat. I ditched mine not due to emissions but the light was coming on for cat heat, so it went for the £55 stainless straight through tube... easy to fit and I think it came with gaskets too.

To get the cat bolts out, make sure as they start turning you advance them a fraction of a turn and then back them off a bit, keep doing this to slowly release them, it helps by ejecting the rust and scale from the threads rather than jamming the lot in there, and then breaking it when you've get them half way out.

My car has eaten 2 O2 sensors too - from memory cable broke off both times...

If the old MOT is still valid and you were getting it tested before it expires, then I believe, even though this one has failed, you're still okay until the expiration of last years ticket, no?

Two options - borrow a cat from someone who's decatted their car and kept the cat for MOT time (where are you in the country? someone on here might be able to help) and then fit a decat after. Not *technically* legal.
Or buy a replacement cat - either new or second hand from a known and respected supplier. I stress this as only recently I was reading about how several people at one office found their cars had all had the cats cut out. Scrappies are offering £50 for cats so some people have taken to crawling under cars, knicking the cat and buggering off.

A duff O2 sensor will often lead to high fuel consumption too - how many miles are you getting to a tank?

Mine just failed it's MOT last month and I still had a few days left of my old MOT. I asked if I was still able to drive the car and the guy told me he wouldn't stop me driving away but if I was stopped by the police or caused an accident he implied there would be trouble ahead.

Its a 96 model, am i right in thinking that if i change the cat and the O2 sensor, there can't be much more wrong with it?
