Pads and Discs

Ok, i'm going to change the rear pads and discs on the Mk1 MX5. Now i've heard the 'green stuff' pads aren't all they cracked up to be. so, what is the best option, i know that the rears don't need to be anything special, but i'd like peoples views.
Oh and i'd like them to be available from MX5 parts, or someone else i can order online and get them delivered.

My experiance of greenstuff wasn't bad. They did a lot of road miles, 1 airfield day and 1 trackday at bedford (where the fronts wore out).

A Lot of dust though. So I've just put red stuff on as they shuld produce less dust. No problems with road driving so far and 1st trackday to come...

The Axxis pads from P5 are supposed to be good.

Or just wait for mx5 parts to do the disc and pads package again smile

Wow, bargain, cheers DtM. Are these - http://www.boundville.co.uk/brake-pads-mx-5-18-rea... for both rears? i guess they are, but dont want to presume.

I'd heard that the green/red stuff disc produe a lot of dust. Any views on the Kevlar ones?

A set of rears will be all 4 pads , not sure about brake dust ... as i have anti brake dust wheels hehe

I dont know if those will dust as bad as the greenstuff. The ultimax range is EBC's range of "standard" replacement pads.

ah haaaa....good choice dennis, could do with those, a lot less cleaning time!

Right, i've gone for the standard discs, those pads above, and some extra W clips as someone managed to lose one last time. I'm not looking to spend too much money on them just yet as i'll be looking to upgrade them within the next year, and i'm only doing this to see if it gets rid of a mysterious squeak!

P.S - that ''lowered'' wheelbarrow cracks me up whenever i see this pic.

Ive got a rattle from the arse of mine and im sure its because i have no w clips etc for my rear pads .

I've got the kevlar pads on ours from boundville along with the standard front discs and i've been quite impressed. Sometimes they do need a bit of warming up from cold though!

i didn't like the kevlars when i tried them - found them very poor in modulation and i melted them away at bedford (tho it is a hard track on brakes).

axxis ultimates are imo the best performing rear pad for the money, you can get them online at P5. just heard far too many horror stories about poor quality of greenstuffs to have been put off by them - some peeps like them, others from personal experience won't ever touch them again, but why go with something with variable quality control when you don't need to?

I tried greenstuff before and while some sets were fine others were shocking. They do dust LESS (not more) than most other pads in normal road use but will dust a lot if you use them hard as they aren't made for fast-road/track use.

Axxis Ultimates are about as good as you can get - Mintex 1144 are probably a bit better but much more expensive. They are made for track-day use but work brilliantly from cold and give the brake pedal much more bite and a progressive feel. The only real downside is that they do dust a lot.

The best all-round pads are stock Mazda items. They have very good pedal feel, good braking power and they dust up least of all the pads i've tried. They aren't outstanding in any area but are very good all round and are a reasonable cost from MX-5 Parts.

Lastly - make sure you do have decent rear pads. They don't contribute as much braking power as the fronts but you need a good front/rear braking balance. I always try to match front & rear pads.

I disagree with Greenstuff dusting less. The originals (unknown brand) on my car made hardly any dust (when cleaning the wheels a light wash would do). Grrenstuff always made a lot (wheels were as black as a black cat in dark room at nightwink ). But that might be my driving style....I expected it on track as like you say that is not what they were really for. But I got a lot of dust on the roads too. The redstuff I've switched too do appear to be producing a lot less dust than the greenstuff.

One of GreenStuffs claims is that they dust less. I have seen GS pads that dusted little and I've seen others that disappeared into dust very quickly with a bit of high-spirited driving.

Of course, comparing them to an unknown brand doesn't really add to the discussion. They might be £100 a pair exotic pads made in limited numbers for exclusive clients or they could be Halfords own brand.
