Hi,

just bought a 1992 Eunos Roadster 1.6, absolutely loving it so far but I want to do some basic servicing and I have a couple of questions:

1. tyre pressures - the door sticker has english text with the pressures in Japanese - can somebody tell me the recommended pressures please? Tyre size is 185 60 r14.

2. What oil rating should I use? Semi or fully synthetic?

3. where am I best to buy stuff like oil / air filters, brake pads and discs etc..? Is there a good online place or should I just use the local motor factor?

4. I have to park on a hill - does the handbrake work on the rear discs and do they have a tendancy to release grip when the discs cool down? I don't want to find it's rolled away in the morning.

thanks very much
James

For 15" the pressure is 26, but many people usually vary that, depending on tyres and road use. I often put mine up to 28. It's going to around that mark but perhaps someone with 14s can advise better.

2. What oil rating should I use? Semi or fully synthetic?
I think fully - oil of choice for many owners is Mobil 1 0W-40. I think you need just under 4l. Costco do it quite cheap for about £25.

www.mx5parts.co.uk  sell many/most (Mazda) service parts at a fraction of the cost.

Yes, handbrake is on rear discs. I do find mine slips occasionally but I just tighten it up. Put the hanbrake off and behind the rear calipers there's a screw with a cap over it, remove this and inside there's a hex key (no. 4). Tighten this up fully and then loosen by half a turn. Once done you can then tighten up the actual handbrake, just take off the cover and use a size 10 (I think) socket. You could always leave the car in gear to be on the safe side too.

www.miata.net  has lots of servicing instructions
www.mx5nutz.com/forum
and www.mx5ocforum.co.uk  both have a host of information and knowledgable people.

The recommended tyre pressure is 26psi. Start there and play with the pressures a bit until you are happy. Goodyear F1 are usually happy at 26psi whereas tyres with softer sidewalls often feel better with a couple of psi more. Tyre size shouldn't make any difference to pressure - I run my 205/40/17 at the same 27psi as my 195/50/15.

Parking on a hill - leave the car in gear (1st or reverse depending which way the car is facing) and turn the steering so that it rolls into the kerb.

Thanks you all very much, very helpful info. The tyres look a bit squishy at the moment so I need to check them ASAP.

They're all pretty low on tread, so looks like it'll need 4 new tyres soon - any recommendations for a brand of tyre that's not too expensive but provides a decent balance of grip in the dry and the wet?

I'll be using the car all year round so I want a tyre that won't be too skittish during the winter.

Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 or Toyo Proxes T1S. I haven't checked to see if they do them in your size though. But those are two of the main brands that are favoured. I have the Eagle F1s on mine.

I'm sure Lazza will be able to give you more information as to what tyre is best when!

Unfortunately neither is available in 14"

Even the Goodyear GSD2 is like hens teeth now. You can get Toyo R888 evil though. But not much cop for all year round tyres. I'm stuck for options really.

I don't think there is a tyre that is good in all conditions. F1 GSD2 and Toyo T1S/R are excellent in wet & dry but very poor when temps get below about 5C. Something like Goodyear Ultragrip/Hydragrip and very good in wet and cold but not great on warm dry roads.
Personally I'd go for F1 or T1S/R and just drive carefully on the few occasions it gets very cold.
There are other options but these are generally considered to be the favourites.

14" is a struggle tho - i'm considering going to 15's just so that i can get some decent (and reasonably priced!) rubber.

Blackcircles.com has Yokohama S306s at £28.41 each - I thought that Yokohamas were normally good tyres.

They also have Toyo Proxes CF1s at £32 each, with £10 off if you buy 4.

Anyone know anything about these makes?

My tyres claim to have the GSD2 in our size..... 2 week delivery though....
Goodyear EAGLE F1 GS-D2
185/60 R14 82V runout * with mytyres.co.uk only £ 64.70

I think Yoko S306 are only available H or T rated. MX-5 need V rated tyres.
I haven't seen a glowing report for them yet anyway.

I dont think thats right Lazza. My MK1 handbook says 185/60R14 82H. tongue out

Mind you I always fit V rated tyres because I find they balance easier.... smile

V = Best
H = Legal

already got hankook rs2 on 15's for trackwink

but that quote from mytyres, 65 quid each - it's similar for any tyres that i was looking at - it's double the cost of the same tyre in a 15"!! therefore each set of 14" rubber will cost you an extra 120 quid!

i have toyo proxes cf-1 at the mo on my 14's. they are a reasonable mid level tyre for the price, not great grip, not great in the wet (especially braking) but they do the job, predictable.

Yep 14" tyre size prices have gone through the roof. All those escorts are being scrapped and no cars come with 14" rims as new do they? I guess it was 18 months ago I got 4 F1 GSD2 for just over £200 fitted.

Maybe it's just later 1.8s that need V-rated tyres?

My 195/50/15 F1 GSD3 cost me a tad over £160 fitted & balanced at Bracknell Tyres & Battery biggrin

I've got Yokohamas on mine - don't seem to have worn at all in 2 years and enjoy wet and dry grip.

Not sure on rating - probably H, but since H is 130 mph, and a 1.6 struggles to get above 115, I really wouldn't put any priority on getting a higher rating.

Hi, mines got yokahama's on it and agree with the lack of wear, mine have been on about 3 years and still passed an mot, covered about 10,000 miles. In the wet is a completely different matter, skittish as hell but fun, just drive with awareness in the winter. glad you are enjoying the car.

I've just checked the car and in fact it already has 4 Yokohama S306s on it, and they seem to grip really well so far, and for £28 each they seem like a real bargain, so I think I'll replace them with the same tyre.
