I've read about doing this on a couple of posts?

What exactly do you need to do??

What does it improve?

Sorry if this has been asked before, cant find any detailed how-to guides..

You need a timing/strobe light and a spanner - 10mm I think.
Loosen the clamp bolt that hold the cam-angle sensor and rotate it to adjust the ignition timing.
If that doesn't tell you what you need to be able to adjust it then you probably need someone else to do it for you.

What advancing the timing from the stock 10BTDC to 14BTDC will give you is more mid-range torque possibly at the expense of a little bit of top end horse-power. It's well worth it though as you use mid-range torque all the time whereas you are above 6500rpm very rarely and anyway, there is a definite improvement in mid-range whereas the negative effect at the top end isn't noticeable.

Thanks Lazza, expected you to be the first to respond, you know alot about this little cars..

Where can I grab a timing/strobe light from, i've got the spanner.. and fancy giving it a shot, or can I easily cock it up?

If its best to leave it to the experts where do you recommend? I'm in Bucks/Berkshire.

It's just that I have nothing better to do so I'm always on the forums laugh

It is an easy job to do really:
Make sure the 10 & 14 degree marks are clearly visible (tipex is good).
Attach the timing light as per instructions.
Make sure the timing is set to 10BTDC (doesn't matter if it isn't, just a sanity check to make sure everything is working).
Loosen the clamp-bolt (hard to miss - the bolt has a really long head) just enough so you can rotate the CAS.
Rotate the CAS until the timing pointer lines up with the 14 mark.
Re-tighten the clamp-bolt.
Go out for a drive biggrin

Have I missed anything? (it's been a while since I've done this - the procedure is very different (difficult) on a Mk2.5.

Best to take a look at the miata.net article on it before you start - the markings you'll have on your crank pulley change depending on the year of production, and that article will tell you exactly what you should be looking for.
