Hi Guys,
I'm in a loop of not knowing what to choose.

My car has the longest CAT (475mm) which means a lot of the MK1 exhausts wont fit. But I'd like a nice stainless one that sounds nice but is quiet enough to do trackdays.

What exhaust have people with the 475mm CAT fitted?

Then as I expected the suspention needs replacing. I know the P5 puredrive stuff is supposed to be "fantastic" etc. But is it tricky to set up being all adjustable. And whats it costing compared to the old best bet of FM springs and KYB AGX shocks?

Ideas people? (or are you all going to say phone Phil at P5 and let him decide... smile )

although i havent experienced anything else, i will say that the KYB AGX shocks and FM springs are very good for the price, work well with the car (soft enough not to cause problems on the road but adjustable enough for track-days etc).

i doubt you will really have problems with exhausts and track-days if you are keeping the cat. my car is a standard 1990 eunos which last weekend registered as 90 decibels at about 5k rpm static reading. so a new exhaust would have to be a lot louder to fail 95 decibels

The P5 suspension isn't particuarly hard to set up. Phil/Ste will tell you how many "clicks" to run so you just dial in that many and off you go. You could happily leave it like that and never worry any further or you could have a play and see if you can improve on it to your personal tastes. If you get P5 to fit them, they'll do all that for you.

Having seen the difference demonstrated, I'd recommend finding the extra few quid for the Mk2 top mounts if you go for the PureDrive setup.

Whats the effect of the MK2 top mounts? And does the puredrive setup need the dustboots?

I've just had a nosey on the P5 website and the lazy buggers off on holiday! Otherwise I'd be phoneing him now... smile

Ste's still about so you can bother him if you have questions. The Mk2 top mounts are much stiffer than the Mk1s. There's noticeable movement in the Mk1 version if you squeeze it / bend it. The Mk2 top mounts are much more rigid. The PureDrive shocks are machined so that you can use either type of top mount. I think the PureDrive setup also comes with poly bumpstops which should also include the dust boots, but probably best to check.

A bit of "squidge" is ok. 90% of the time this is the OHs daily drive. So I cant make the thing too hard and track focused or I'll get arse ache.

If you have the long cat version, try Larini as I know they have two different types of Mk1 exhaust available.

Plus, they sound good.

Cheers Combover. Any idea on sound levels? I just dont want to get a new exhaust and find I cant get on trackdays!

Not a problem Munter. I took my old Larini equipped Mk1 on track and never had a problem. The Larinis are tuned for nice mellow, non-rapsy kind of sound.

I was surprised at how good the P5 Puredrive setup is on the road. It is actually very comfortable on the settings recommended by Phil. I can only compare it to standard suspension as I've never tried any others but I reckon it's great value for money.

I have a nice stainless aftermarket exhaust on my Merlot, but I don't recall the brand, I'll have a look this afternoon. It is bigger than the standard pea shooter, but not stupidly large. Single exit. Sounds very nice (raspy when pushed hard in certain revs) but not loud.

As for suspension, this is an area I am looking closely at. My car rides very high and I thought I may as well change the shocks when I do the springs. Current favourite is the KYB shocks with FM springs from P5. MX5Parts do a KYB set with 'sport' springs which seems good value.

I like the sound of the Puredrive but as I cannot find a price on P5's website I am assuming it is 'if you need to ask, you can't afford!'

Will let you know if I find out the brand of my exhaust!

The P5 PD is about the same price as similar offerings from Gaz and the like.
It's better than Gaz though if only because the shock bodies are made of alloy so don't rust like the Gaz shocks.

MX5Parts do the Gaz kit for £490 inc VAT. Is this comparable to the P5 in terms of price?

What does the Gaz+P5 offer above and beyond the cheaper KYB Adjustables with FM Springs? (Apologies if this is a numpty question!).

i think you'll really struggle to get it over the noise limits at most tracks - it shouldn't be an issue unless you're running de-catted and with a turbo exhaust...

Going blind in my old age smile

I had a http://www.powerflowexhausts.net/ fitted to mine that was for me to quiet , looking at if off the car it looks to be well made although friends who have had them in the past disagree ,it seems a lot depends on the franchise
