Just been offered an 1998 MK2 mx5 with 44k on the clock. black, 1 inch tear on side of vinyl roof and a small amount of bubble surface rust on back sills and wheel arches... overall the car is smart and clean full service history 1 years Mot and 1 year road tax...The guy wants £3500 for it but I am sure I could get him down to 3k...if I do would that be a fair price or what..

bearing in mind that I will have to spend some money for a hood and also the rust repairs...

DO NOT underestimate the cost of your rust repairs. A bit of rust showing on the rear arches and sills can very easily (and quickly) turn into very large holes. Many MX5's are now showing rust problems.
There are hundreds if not thousands of these cars for sale, and £3k should buy you a good example, i'd look elsewhere.

£3k for a Mk2 would be the cheapest car I've heard of.

Usually they are £3800+

But yours needs some repairs.

BUT you will never be able to get enough discount to pay to get a rough car mint IMO.
