I've just tried to fit the new front pads I bought, which were meant to be correct for a non-sport 1.8 MKII.

They're too chuffing small.

Presumably this means that either someone has upgraded the brakes, or that as well as the limited slip diff we got the Sport brakes as standard.

Better brakes I like, but pads for the Sport appear to be twice the price of standard pads.

Anyone know about this?

Your car is an Arizona yes? If so then yes, I think that came with the Sport brakes nerd

Yes, it's an Arizona. Thanks for that, I'll get the correct ones ordered today. I've not disassembled the rear brakes yet, but the rear pads I've bought look to be correct.

... but aren't correct. The resemblance disappears once you get the old pads out and have a proper look. Bugger. Sport brakes front and rear it is.
