Hi Everyone,
Thinking of returning to the fold with another mx-5. Today i had a run in a rare RS-Ltd with the recaros etc and had an absolute riot.
However i must be getting old as i found the ride a bit too stiff. Question is with this example up at almost 6K i'm wondering how easy it would be to buy a basic 1.8 and then spec it along the same lines, with a slightly more pliant suspension.
Any ideas??

That's bloody nice!
I would be tempted to buy that one as it has all the braces and 'go-faster' bits a lot of people look for. It may be worth putting up with the ride depending on what you want to use it for. I'd rather be stimulated than sent to sleep.
If it is too hard, then buy a normal Mk1. If the suspension does need attention, got to MX-5 Parts, as the have it all.
Hope this helps.
P.S. BUY THAT ONE!

That does look very nice. Close to £6k though? That's enough to get a Mk2.5 these days! They are pretty much the best Mk1 you can get though but still, £6k
As for the suspension - that is the one thing people have always complained about with RS Ltds. The Bilsteins are too hard for comfortable road use but as it's 15 years old it's probably time to dump it anyway. Go for KYB AGX, GAZ or P5 PureDrive and you'll improve the ride and handling in one go.

Thats what i thought, 6K is strong strong money for a mark1.
I had a mark 2.5 originally, loved it to bits. Which would you think is the better drive?
Loved the noise and handling of the RS but nothing like as supple as i remember the 2.5 but maybe i've got the rose-tinted spectacles on.

It really is down to personal preference, but debate about this can tend to be a bit heated.
I personally, prefer my Mk2.5 than my old Mk1. I would however, love to try a Mk1 1.8 with PAS and a TorSen diff and see how that drives as i'm comparing my current car (which has both) to my old car (which had neither).
The Mk1 is lighter though, a point proved so eloquently by Fruicake who hoofed his Mk1 up a dual carriage way near here at over 1 car length ahead of my Mk2.5, despite mine being the more advanced and more powerful S-VT version.
It all boils down to what you want.

Budget around £500 for the suspension (can be done cheaper), Seats about £200, braces about £130, wheels can be had for about £350. The list could go on, but that is really all you'd need (well...maybe a supercharger ).
You could add roughly £200 for polybushes too (although i'm not sure on this as I haven't looked into it too much).

S-Special/V-Specials are very similar, with the same Bilstein suspension+bracing, but normal MX5 seats and a slightly longer final drive (so you're not buzzing away at 70mph on the m'way).
You get used to the Bilsteins - after 3 years and over 60k miles using mine, I'm still not ready to get rid of them

what about this one?

More comfortable suspension, so maybe the best of both worlds?
