Quite happy for people in Primeras to make judgements on my sexuality whilst I'm sliding round greasy roundabouts thanks!
Ooh-er! "sliding round greasy roundabouts!"I think MX5s are great. That doesn't stop them being considerably overated though - I keep expecting a "What would be quicker a 1.6 Uk spec MX5 or a Zonda F?" or "NCT - is this your '5?" thread.

On the minus side, it is bland looking, common, made of tin foil, plasticky inside, the engine rattles like a goodun, it couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding, and it has no soul!
On the plus side, it has sublime handling, it makes a reasonable noise, the top comes down, it is cheap to buy run and insure, you can park it without worrying about it, it doesn't attract negative attention, and above all it is fun!
The +ves outweight the -ves for me but I'm certainly under no illusions about it!

I don't think it's bland at all. I actually think it's quite good looking. The problem is that they're so popular you see a lot of them and so that makes it seem bland. On the plus side, it has sublime handling, it makes a reasonable noise, the top comes down, it is cheap to buy run and insure, you can park it without worrying about it, it doesn't attract negative attention, and above all it is fun!

I don't think they're particularly overrated are they? I'm under no illusions about it being a supercar!!

I agree they're good little cars (I sued to own one...), but the PH reaction to them might lead some people to believe they're better automotive nirvana, rather than simply a very good car for the money. They handle nicely, but I was quite surprised to discover that the TVR S-Series (which can be had for about the same as a top notch mk1 MX5) handles atleast as well and has that little bit more power required to eploit the chassis balance as standard. I also found the MR2 was actually quite a nice handling car, yet from the comparisions you hear you wouldn't expect it to get anywhere near a '5 in the twistites.
The comparisons go on, but like all cars that gain a cult following the reality is that whilst it may be as good as the competitors or in some cases slightly better it isn't head and shoulders over everything else.
Sounds like you've got a pretty realistic view of it already to be fair, so I guess I'm preaching to the converted! I agree with the negative points (I also agree with the positive points) but for me the problem was that a strict two seater with a relatively small boot wasn't a sensible everyday proposition and there are plenty of more exciting cars around for a weekend toy.

At least you won't be spat on for driving an MX-5. Wonder how much tax or hatred will get the OP to ditch his 'Stang
Tax? Once it gets to £10/litre I may have a re-think, but until then...; as for hatred, well, no-one loves me, apart from Maureen the Cat, and I sometimes think she's spoofing me.Legend83 said:

There is one big positive to the big girly hairdressing gayer image though.
Look at all the cheap, decent to drive "fun" cars that don't have that image. (E30, E36, 200SX, ITR, Impreza, Prelude, etc.)
Then try to find a decent, unmolested one that's not been covered in styling tat, thrashed, crashed, had the boost notched up to self-destruct where applicable, and half the interior plastics scratched and broken during a hasty pre-sale removal of the audio system.
Compare to number of solid, well-looked-after MX-5s on the market at any one time.

It's tough paying £180 a year, it's true. How much is the Mazda? 24mpg round town is hard to stomach too. I'm not sure anyone has ever even contemplated spitting at a Mustang, have they? My guess would be that in ten years time the Mustang will also have offset the depreciation on the Mazda several times over....unless the Chancellor twigs... Besides which, they make Mustang V6 convertibles too.........

OK, let's call it quits.
