Are there any real world MPG figures for all MKs of MX5?

Am looking to save fuel bill and don't fancy a diesel really so thought that llight weight could be the way forward (Whilst retaining some day to day practicality!)

Mixed driving in the 1.8 MK1. 30mpg.

The "problem" is that when your doing a high speed it's also doing a lot of rpm. So fuel economy drops off. Sports cars, not good for mpg, even the light(ish) ones.

Consistent 29.9mpg, on a Mk1 1.8 Roadster VR-A, doing 50 miles a day, over the past year, mostly motorway.

Having A/C on or off makes no difference.

even having a few decent blasts this week, i'm still over 30mpg. but that is on a 40-mile trip twice a day...

Over motorways and decent runs out, I've been managing to get about 35mpg out of it.

Throw in a few work commutes (a really staggeringly crappy drive, short, slow, full of lengthy stops at traffic lights and people doing stupid things...) and that dropped to just over 30mpg. I suspect it would get into the 20s if I did solely urban hacking in it.

I've not been making any particular concessions to economy, and most of that is with the roof down.

Early Mk1 1.6 (~115bhp).

Just over 30mpg. Agree with what everyone else says at about revs at motorway speeds. It almost needs a sixth gear... however I think I sometimes forget it's only got a 1.6 engine!

Mazda claim 46.6 mpg for their new 2.0 and 34.5 for the 2.0s. Has anyone managed to get close to this? What about Mk 2 and 2.5s?

(I know they are getting heavier as they get into later Mks, but I assume that engine tech is also improving!)

The commute would be mainly Motorway, dual carriageway and A roads so would hope to be pretty decent extra-urban figures. About 20 miles each direction.

Thanks for answers so far

I use mine on mostly country roads. I've calculated it roughly 22mpg.

Mine's not much better at about 24 - 26mpg but then I don't make any of it back up with gentle jaunts. I stopped calculating a while ago, being honest...

In my Mk1 1.8, 35+ mpg is possible on the motorway as long as you hold the revs below 4k.

It reduces massively for urban and short trips though - probably mid 20s I'd estimate.

my mk1 1.8 appears to be delivering about 30mpg in mixed everyday driving with the odd foray to the red line along the back roads...im sure i could eke out much more if i drove sensible....

Absolutely.

But it's damn impossible to keep it below 4k hehe

real world motorway speeds ruin the mpg, certainly in my Eunos S-spec as you do silly revs, if your good anddrive at no more than 70mph on the motorway they are ok.

1.8L 146PS Mk2.5

35 mile journey (5 miles urban + 30 miles motorway)

Have never managed to get better than 33mpg. Last fill-up gave 275 miles till empty.

ETA: 6-speed box but, still feels quite busy cruising at 80-85.

Early Mk 1 1.6 Import - I get about 27 regardless of what I do - drive easy, or driving with purpose!

I think the management (engine) got more sophisticated as you go through the Mk 1-2.5, then of course the Mk3 has a totally different (new?) engine, and they may have decided on some more cruisy ratios for the box!

I consistently get about 27mpg.

That consists of 80 miles per day; about 50 motorway miles and 30 miles of mixed town/country driving.

I generally average 30-35mpg out of my '89 Mk1 Eunos. Really thrashing it (uphill sideways gravel etc) drops below 30 but not actually by too much.
