Hi all wavey

My first post in this section

A friend has bought a MK1 MX5 1.6 with a seized engine, and has been offered a replacement engine which comes from an automatic. Usually I'd expect the differences to be in the gearbox, but are there any differences between an auto and manual engine which he should look out for? I'm thinking engine management systems etc...

Thanks in anticipation of your replies

I could be wrong but I think the auto has different cams and different engine management.

Wouldn't it be easier to look for an engine from a manual car? There must be plenty about.

The auto engine is different from the manual engine.
It has different cams and runs at lower compression to move the torque curve down the rev-range to suit the auto-gearbox.
It is a good choice of engine if you are planing to turbo or supercharge but otherwise don't bother as it is down on power from a manual engine.
