insulation / sounddeadening in bonnet & boot turned to dust!

When I bought my mk1 i noticed that the soundeadening in the boot and under the bonnet had gone all hard and kind of flaked off. almost like the foam had turned to dust?

The car is a 1997 model.
Is this common and any idea on the cause?
Does this really matter and should I replace it?

Throw it away, my mk2 was born without any!

Interesting, my Eunos mk1 '97 doesn't have any under the bonnet or boot lids.

Ditto, maybe it was an aftermarket fitment.

Not std fit.

Jet wash the remaining off, job done !
