new to ownership, a few questions
Discussion
Hello all
Getting to grips with my 2000 1.8 mx5 and loving it.
Just a couple of questions if I may…
Is the oil pressure gauge supposed to in dictate oil pressure -as in dance around depending on pressure as in the accepted sense of many gauges I have seen? Mine remains just right of straight up all the time.
Also sometimes letting the engine revs come back down to idle the revs ‘hunt’ a bit and sometimes it feels its on the verge of stalling, any thing I can do to help iron this out would be good.

The "oil pressure gauge" is actually no more than an oil indicator. If you have any oil pressure it will point up, if not it won't. The early (pre 93?) 1.6 had a real oil-pressure gauge but they were constantly being called by owners saying that there was something wrong with their cars because the oil gauge was moving around so they replaced it with an idiot gauge. You can pretty much ignore it, if it ever drops to 0 the oil light will also come on.
As for the erratic idle - it probably needs a bit of TLC. Do you know when it was last serviced? I'd prescribe new plugs, leads, fuel filter, air filter, oil filter, engine oil change (Mobil 1 0-40) and if you are planning to keep the car for long, gearbox & dif oils as well as gearbox shift-boots if needed.
