started this morning - idles a bit rough,

seems to be missing on the #3 cylinder - engine doesnt change when taking the number 3 lead out, but gets very lumpy and dies if taking the number 2 lead out, with 1, 3 and 4 leads connected.

bugger. Stucking warrington having dropped the missus off at work

Bad HT lead? Damp under the contact?

I guess you've tried drying and WD40ing/similar the contacts.

Probably something minor.

i'm hoping so.

Had to pop it round to a garage, as i'm in the middle of nowhere on an industrial estate, no way of getting to the local motor factors myself.

i was planning on changing the HT leads next month anyway, along with the fuel filter.

To test the HT lead, try swapping #3 with #2. If the lead is dead then it will still run on 3 cylinders but it will be 1, 3 & 4 instead of 1, 2 & 4. If it's still #3 that is missing then the problem is elsewhere.

Don't worry about spark timing, MX-5s run a wasted spark system where 2 plugs fire together - 1 & 4 and 2 & 3 so you can swap between these pairs without a problem.
