Ok i've followed the masses and bought one of these daft toys biggrin

Now what i've bought is a project in need of TLC, but on the good points it's a uk car 1995 M plate in black with 6 months MOT. It needs bodywork both sides at rear arches and various small jobs doing which are now in hand.
As usual thoughts now turn to 'improvements' driving
The car turns out to be the 90bhp model being a 95 but before you all recoil in horror and tell me i've bought the wrong one it didn't matter at the time, yes it was that cheap! and actually it's not bad at all.
My main question is how were they de-tuned from 115? Is it possible to retune them back to the 115bhp? I am planning a k&n filter with stainless exhaust + decat pipe that will help things along but what else can i do?

Like i said the car doesn't feel underpowered and it drives very well, but if there's an easy way to regain the lost 25bhp i'd love to know!

The 90bhp 1.6 isn't a detuned 115bhp 1.6, it's a different engine. The head, cams & pistons are all different for a start so if you wanted to make it a 115bhp then you'd be better off replacing the entire engine in which case fitting a 1.8 would be an even better upgrade. Just replacing the head from a 115bhp car would be a good first step but it won't bring you the full power.

Hi thanks for the reply, I didn't know that. Oh well i'll go with my first option of filter & exhaust then, it might help a little and will sound better if nothing else!

Don't be put off too much - like I said, a 115bhp 1.6 head will help and shouldn't be expensive and an exhaust & filter will also help. I'm sure you can get more details if you search on MX-5 OC Forum, MX5Nutz or Miata.net.

Also, the MX5 is fun with whatever engine you get, so you'll still really enjoy it!
